3.8/5
I had this on my list specifically because I saw the cover of the first book had Batman Beyond (Terry McGinnis) on the cover, and VERY LARGE on the cover, so I knew that he would be a key part of the story. I am a bit behind in my comics (something I’m trying to make up for), and due to that, I haven’t seen much of Batman Beyond in the comic world. Anyone who has read Batman and wanted to see someone else take the mantle knows that Bruce Wayne monopolies his role as Batman.
I got this in book form, not comic form. I have comics for a few of the Future’s End annuals, but not all of them.
I really enjoyed the art style and writing, which combined to create the sense of dread for DC’s future that they were likely trying to build. How they did Superman was awesome, especially with the reveal towards the end of the first book.
Edit: This article was written before I read Convergence, so this next paragraph will sound really dumb to avid DC readers or those who got into comics during/before the New 52.
I did run into a problem with the story in that they kept mentioning a war with Darkseid’s forces and I haven’t read the comics that may have led to that point, so I don’t know if I’m missing context or not. It didn’t seem like I was, as various characters were providing more context about the war, and there were some flashbacks to what happened. Additionally, there was never an asterisk saying “See Batman #151” or anything to that effect. However, that is all a “me problem” because I wasn’t caught up with comics at the time, so I take responsibility on not knowing.
The flashbacks and flash-forwards didn’t break the pacing too badly, but what did cause me some headache was the jumping between groups of heroes/villains. I get that they do it to build suspense, but sometimes a group would only get 2 pages, and then the reader is following someone else.
If you read anything out of the New 52, you like DC in general, or you want to see some of your favorite heroes in a strange situation, I’d recommend picking this up. Some featured characters are: Batman (Terry McGinnis), Batman (Bruce Wayne), Superman, Shazam, The Atom, Frankenstein, Deathstroke, Grifter, Mister Terrific, and Lois Lane.
As with all my reviews thus far, I am not paid to promote, advertise, or discuss this product at all. This website actually only costs me money at this time, so I do this as a passion project.
3.8/5 mostly only losing points because of how difficult it is to keep up with the paneling on the various pages and the narrative leaps around the story.
