Kraven the Hunter

By William Mueller

3/5

It wasn’t the worst movie I’ve seen in the past 12 months, so it has that going for it. The CGI wasn’t quite up-to-snuff as what I’m used to from all the high-budget MCU and other recent films, but it wasn’t terrible.

To mostly avoid spoilers, I’ll say that they threw around a lot of Spider-Man villain names, and the one who transformed looked horrid.

I don’t remember much about Kraven from when I read Spider-Man comics as a kid, but I am not sure about the whole “Lion powers” thing – I feel like I would have remembered that. Felt weird through the whole movie.

The long-ass (1/3rd of the movie or so) flashback really killed any pacing they could have had. The villain’s motivation was “your daddy was mean to me!” …so that’s… something.

Mr. Hunter spent the entire beginning of the movie saying anyone who heard him use the name Kraven didn’t live to speak of it, yet the bad guys find out that name with no explanation, and then find out his actual name afterward – made little sense.

If you want to get an idea of the entire movie without having to watch it on Netflix, I’d watch this video by Pitch Meeting.

When this film was announced, I was hyped to see it in theaters, then it kept getting pushed back, and then I didn’t even know that it had come out when it was finally released. I’m not sure if that was a failure in marketing or if I don’t see enough advertising. Luckily, I saw a big pop-up in Netflix.

3/5 due to the 30-minute flashback, weird CGI, and stupid character design of the villain.
